The Swedish company Saab and the German startup Helsing conducted an unprecedented test in Europe, where a Gripen E fighter jet, controlled by artificial intelligence (AI), faced a human pilot flying a Gripen D.

The experiment, known as “Project Beyond,” involved three flights conducted between May 28 and June 3 and was funded by the Swedish government.

This was the first known test where an AI fully controlled a fighter jet in a beyond visual range (BVR) combat simulation, i.e., in long-range scenarios. Unlike previous AI tests on experimental aircraft or in short-range situations, such as the modified F-16 used by the US in 2023, the focus here was on more realistic and operational applications.

Although the European test did not comparatively evaluate the performance of the AI versus the human pilot, it highlights the growing interest of armed forces in integrating autonomous systems and artificial intelligence into air combat strategies.
